Objective: To introduce the concept of critical thinking and first principle thinking, and to provide a real-world problem to practice these skills. Activity: Riddle Solving and Self-Reflection Instructions:
- Read the following riddle and think about it carefully: You are the manager of a grocery store and you notice that your sales of a certain type of cereal have been decreasing. You check the expiration date of the cereal boxes and they are all still fresh. You check the price and it's the same as the competitors. What could be the problem?
- Use the hints provided below to help guide your thinking:
Hints:
- Look for factors that might have changed recently, such as new competitors or changes in consumer preferences
- Consider the cereal's packaging, marketing, and branding
- Think about the store's layout, location, and target market
- After writing down your solution for the problem, reflect on your own solution by asking yourself:
- How did I approach this problem?
- What were the key drivers of the problem that I identified?
- How did I isolate the root causes of the problem?
- How confident am I in my solution?
- Prepare your self-reflection as a PDF document and upload it to the assignment section
- Review the example solution and compare it with your own solution, and reflect on:
- How does the example solution compare with my answer?
- What did I do well?
- What can I improve on?
- Create a self-reflection document to mark out areas you did well and areas you need to improve
- Tag relevant peers or experts on Truemerit to have them review your solution and provide feedback
- Review the feedback provided by your peers and experts, and reflect on the following:
- How does their feedback compare with my own solution and the example solution?
- What did I learn from their feedback?
- How can I improve my solution based on their feedback?
Assessment:
- The riddle-solving and self-reflection activities will not be graded by instructors. However, by tagging peers and experts, you will receive feedback and evaluations on their work. This will help you to evaluate your own understanding and identify areas for improvement.
