At its core, a story point is a numeric representation of the relative complexity of a user story or task. Complexity includes the amount of work, uncertainty, and risk involved.
For example, a simple bug fix might be 1 story point, while designing a new payment integration might be 8 story points.
The key difference: story points are relative and team-based. The entire team discusses and agrees on the story point value for each user story during estimation sessions.
Because story points represent complexity, they remain stable even if team members change. The complexity of the work does not change just because a new developer joins.
